  17. <p>    Just when he thought it was safe to venture cautiously
  18. into the public eye, Salman Rushdie has had to burrow
  19. underground once more. The marked author of The Satanic Verses,
  20. which caused the late Ayatullah Khomeini of Iran to issue a
  21. fatwa, or death sentence, on him in 1989, had been trying to
  22. emerge from hiding, making unannounced book-signing appearances
  23. and even granting several interviews. But last week brought word
  24. that a hit squad has been gearing up an assassination plan and
  25. that the reward for killing Rushdie has been doubled to $2
  26. million. The death threat could well complicate efforts to
  27. improve the shaky diplomatic ties between London and Tehran.
